The Woodhorn Museum
Step back in time and learn about the former coal mining industry and a former way of life that has vanished forever.
Visit the museum’s interactive exhibition and immerse yourself in a worker’s life in a traditional coal mining community in Northumberland back in 1918.
Some of the colliery’s buildings worth a visit include; the Hempstead shaft that descends 888ft into the abyss below, Jack Engine House, a steam-powered engine used to transport the workers up and down the shaft in a wooden tub, and Cappell Fan House powered the mine’s ventilation system.
Queen Elizabeth II Park
Next to the Woodhorn Museum is The Queen Elizabeth II Country Park, just off the A189 between Ashington and Blyth. The centrepiece is the 16-acre lake located at the heart of the park.
The park is a great place to visit whether you are out with the family to enjoy a picnic, feed the birds, observe the wildlife, or just out for a relaxing walk.
The circular walk around the lake takes you through woodland and over open grassland takes around 30 – 40 minutes. Along the way, you can relax at one of the jetties and enjoy the views across the lake.
Wansbeck Riverside Park
Wansbeck Riverside Park, a local nature reserve, is located to the south of Ashington, between the A1068 and A189, and comprises 112 hectares of woodland, grassland and a river.
The park is an ideal place to get a breath of fresh air while going for a stroll with family or friends and just taking your dog for a walk.
