How can I apply to become a driving coach?

You can apply to become an instructor by visiting the official government website. The application process requires only basic information about you and your driving records. 

Once your application is approved, you can begin preparing for the training that will prepare for your accreditation.

You’ll need to attend classes online and face-to-face to demonstrate your teaching ability. 

Are the tests difficult to pass?

The first part of the ADI qualifications is done online in your own time. 

Part two comprises 15 hours of in-car tutoring with a trainer and ensures you become a beginner-level instructor.

After completing part three of the course, you will become a fully qualified driving coach.

What should you expect from your training programme?

To become a driving coach, you must pass all three ADI qualifications.

This course will cover the basics of driving, emergency handling, how to teach students, and the law governing driving instructor duties.

Expect to become fully qualified in 6 to 12 months.

Part 1 – online training and exams

Part one of the qualification process comprises two separate tests. You need to pass both assessments.

The theory test assesses your knowledge of the Highway Code, general safety on the roads, basic first aid knowledge, and how to instruct a pupil.

The test is ninety minutes long and has a minimum pass rate of 85%.

The second test is a hazard perception exam assessing fourteen videos, one of which may include two hazards.

Score 57 points of the possible 75 on this test to pass.

Part 2 – in-car training and practical exam

The advanced practical driving test is the second stage. The DVSA examiner will ask you to demonstrate your professional driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code. 

Signature provides study materials and at least 15 hours of individual training in a dual-controlled car with one of their ORDIT-accredited instructors. 

The examination lasts for around an hour and covers general driving ability, vehicle manoeuvres, vehicle safety and an eyesight test.

Part 3 face-to-face training and final assessment

The final stage assesses your abilities as an instructor and prepares you to start training your own students.

The practical assessment measures your ability to teach pupils effectively. 

The test lasts about an hour and consists of a live lesson with a real pupil under supervision by a DVSA inspector.

In your test, your pupil will be driving, and you will instruct the driver from the passenger seat of a dual-controlled car. The examiner will be sitting in the back. 

Before you start:

1. Explain to the pupil the intended goals of the lesson.
2. Present them to your examiner.
3. Explain the purpose and why they should be learning it.

The next step is to go ahead with the lesson. Treat it like a regular lesson with a pupil. 

After the lesson ends, you will give your pupil feedback. 

The examiner will then provide your final result and any observations.

The examiner will assess over 17 competencies, including lesson planning, risk management, and teaching abilities and strategies.

We will explain these before you take the exam.

If you pass with a grade of A or B, well done, you can apply for your first ADI instructor badge.

Optionally, you can apply for a trainee instructor licence before completing all of part 3. Becoming a trainee will require 40 hours of one-on-one coaching with your dedicated Signature coach. 

You could then complete the remainder of your training after you have started earning some money under the Signature School of Motoring banner. You can discuss this option during your tuition.
