What’s involved in our approved driver instructor training course?

If you plan on becoming a driving instructor, you will need training.

Before starting your course, make sure you are eligible and get all the required documents. 

The in-car training lasts approximately 72 hours. It will equip you and give you the knowledge and skills to become a teacher of drivers.

Part 1 – the online education and theory tests

Part 1 of the qualification process involves two separate tests.

The theory exam tests your knowledge and ability to instruct pupils. 

The test lasts for 90 minutes. To pass, you must get 85% or more.

The second test includes a Hazard Perception Test that involves watching 14 videos. This test will require you to score 57 or more out of 75 points.

Part 2 – one-on-one coaching and practical exam

The second stage involves an advanced practical driving test. The DVSA examiner will require you to demonstrate a certain professional level of driving ability by assessing your driving skills and knowledge of the Highway Code.

Signature provides study material, but the upfront training includes 15 hours of one-on-one coaching with an ORDIT Signature-certified trainer in one of their dual-controlled cars.

It takes one hour to complete the exam, which covers five core areas; eyesight, vehicle safety and general driving abilities, manoeuvres and independent driving.

Passing the Driving Ability Test requires that you make no more than six, none of which should be dangerous or severe.

Part 3 – ongoing practical in-car training and final instructor exam

The final stage evaluates your instructional skills, preparing to pass on your driving abilities to others.

Part 3 of the ADI qualifications focuses on practical testing that measures your ability to teach pupils well. 

The final driving test is approximately one hour long and consists of a standard lesson taught to a student under supervision by a DVSA examiner.

In this exam, your pupil will drive. Your pupil will receive their guidance and instructions in the same manner as any other lesson. The examiner, in the back seat, will also receive an explanation of the purpose and goals of the class. 

Focus and stay calm; the examiner’s goal is to help you succeed, not hinder your progress.

Next is the lesson. Think of it as another lesson for a student. 

Bear in mind that the examiner will be marking in specific areas. These include lesson planning, risk management and teaching and learning techniques. We will explain what these are before you take the test. Keep those in the back of your mind during the exam. 

After the lesson ends, you’ll give feedback to your pupil in the usual way. Then you will receive your results and any observations from the examiner.

To pass part 3 of the ADI course, you must get either a Grade A or B. Well done! You can then apply for your instructor licence and badge via the driver and vehicle licensing agency (DVLA).

Like part 2 of the ADI assessments, you are allowed three attempts to pass this exam to become a fully qualified driving instructor.

Before fully completing part 3, you can apply for a trainee instructor’s licence and earn some money with Signature as an instructor before completing the final exam. 

By law, to become a trainee instructor with Signature, you will need 40 hours of coaching by one of our trainers.
