What to expect from your training programme

You will need professional training to teach students how to drive.

Part 1 – online learning and exams

Part one of your qualification process includes two separate multiple-choice tests. You must pass both sections of the training to proceed.

The theory test will assess your knowledge of the Highway Code, driving standards and techniques, first aid knowledge, and the theory of teaching a pupil.

The test takes 90 minutes, and you must score at least 85 per cent to pass.

The second exam is a hazard perception test assessing fourteen video clips. You must score at least 57 out of 75 points on this test.

Part 2 – training and practical assessment

The second stage is a practical driving test. A DVSA examiner will expect you to demonstrate a professional driving level and extensive knowledge of the Highway Code.

The bulk of the training comprises 15 hours with an accredited ORDIT Signature trainer in a suitable tuition vehicle. Signature also provides study materials for the test. 

This official exam will last an hour and cover various aspects, including driving skills, vehicle manoeuvring, vehicle safety and an eyesight test. 

To pass, you will need to avoid getting more than six minor errors.

Part 3 – practical training and the final test

This final stage tests your ability to instruct and prepares you to teach others your driving skills.

Initial training will include the necessary hours required to obtain a trainee license, which is 40 hours by law. After that, you can continue with the rest of part three or apply for a trainee instructor licence.

The final exam in part 3 consists of a practical test which assesses your ability and willingness to teach students effectively. 

It lasts around one hour and consists of a lesson given to a student under the supervision of a DVSA examiner.

Your pupil will be learning to drive while you take your test. The examiner will sit in one of the back seats, and you’ll give instruction much like a typical lesson. 

Your dedicated instructor can optionally sit in the back during the test, but we will not be able to help you.

First, you will need to show your examiner your lesson plan. Next, introduce your examiner to the pupil. Explain the lesson’s purpose and remind the student that they are not in an exam.

Next, oversee the lesson. Try to think of it just as another training session with a student. 

Is your DVSA examiner going to pass you?

Seventeen competencies, divided into three categories, are assessed in the test.

The three categories comprise lesson planning, risk management and your abilities to teach students. 

After the lesson ends, you will give your pupil their feedback before receiving your result and any observations from the examiner.

The examiner will review your performance and give you your Part 3 report. You must have a grade of A or B to pass the Part 3 test. 

After passing this exam, you can finally apply for your first ADI badge via the DVSA (driving and vehicle standards agency). And this is all possible within 12 months.

You have a maximum of 3 attempts to pass this part of the training, and if you fail three times, you will need to restart the whole course again.
